The Dalai Lama's leather shoe vs VOA's net survey

The Dalai Lama's leather shoe vs VOA's net survey

While the 76-year-old Dalai Lama was celebrating his birthday through various activities in the US, his followers around the world are racking their brains to express their best wishes to this funny master, who took off his slippers and put on a pair of heavy leather shoes in the hot summer before flying to the White House to celebrate his birthday.Glimpse Into Daily Life in North Korea.

The Dalai Lama's way of birthday celebration differs greatly from the Tibetan traditions, in which he should be celebrating it with relatives and friends. However, this old lama ignored his exiled Tibetans, his pious followers, and flew a long way to the US for the meeting.

In fact, his travel to the US is nothing of a birthday celebration but a political visit. With the painstaking efforts of some "enthusiasts" in American Congress, the Dalai Lama finally realized his dream of meeting with the US President Barack Obama just a few hours before leaving, which made his travel a rewarding one.

In Dalai Lama's words, he reputed Obama as his "old friend", and thus their political talk as a pep talk for his friend before the approaching 2012 presidential election. But the hasty and unpresentable meeting proved that the Dalai Lama was kissing Obama's ass. But to this old lama, a meeting with Obama could be the best gift for his birthday no matter how it was held. In other words, the success of his travel only depended on whether he could meet his "old friend" Obama for he knew well what would be going on in the meeting. Obama knew this too, so he presented the meeting and called it a "private" one. But we Chinese knew better about their tricks.

For the Dalai Lama, his birthday could be called "meaningful" for it endows him an opportunity for a new illusion. He was emboldened by the meeting and could now begin with "it is hard to say" when talking about the situation in Tibet in the next twenty or even thirty years. At the same time, he expressed his confidence that he could return to Tibet for a reunion in his lifetime.

Glimpse Into Daily Life in North Korea

Glimpse Into Daily Life in North Korea

A little boy skips along grasping a classmate's hand, his cheeks flushed and a badge of the Great Leader's smiling face pinned to his Winnie the Pooh sweatshirt. Men in military green share a joke over beers at a German-style pub next door to the Juche tower. Schoolgirls wearing the red scarves of the Young Pioneers sway in unison as they sing a classic Korean tune I, too, learned as a child.

Everywhere I look, communist North Korea is a world both foreign and familiar to my Korean-American eyes, a place where the men wear Mao suits and children tote Mickey Mouse backpacks, where they call one another "comrade" and love their spicy kimchi.

Since becoming the Seoul bureau chief for The Associated Press in 2008, I have made five eye-opening visits to North Korea. Chief Asia photographer David Guttenfelder has traveled to the country numerous times over the past 12 years.Jean H. Lee, The Associated Press bureau chief in Seoul, and David Guttenfelder, AP's chief Asia photographer, have made numerous reporting trips to North Korea in recent years.Unspoiled and unguarded, Vermont's old-fashioned swimming holes offer beauty _ and some risk. They were granted unprecedented access on their latest journey to Pyongyang and areas outside the nation's showcase capital.

We're among the few Western journalists who've been allowed into North Korea during a period of heightened tensions that began three years ago with the shooting death of a South Korean tourist. A parade of provocations has followed: a long-range rocket launch, a nuclear test, the sinking of a South Korean warship and a deadly artillery attack on a front-line island.

Unspoiled and unguarded, Vermont's old-fashioned swimming holes offer beauty _ and some risk

In the only New England state without an Atlantic Ocean coastline, there are no ocean waves to bodysurf, no outdoor water parks to splash in.But Vermont has no shortage of places to cool off: When summer's heat settles in, people head to the countryside to cool off in old-fashioned swimming holes that dot the state's rivers and streams.Check out discount shoes online for the best ladies shoes. Clean and free, these hidden gems offer emerald-green water, boulders or rope swings to jump from and breathtakingly beautiful natural vistas. They're also so numerous (and often so hard to find unless you're a local) that they rarely become crowded.

There are downsides, however: No bathrooms, no parking lots. And with no lifeguards, tricky natural features and sometimes-difficult access roads or trails, they can also be dangerous.Last week, a 12-year-old boy drowned at Bolton Potholes swimming hole in Bolton. The week before that, two swimmers had to be rescued from Huntington Gorge after being overcome by strong currents.

Vermont has dozens of swimming holes, which depending on your definition, can include lakes, backyard ponds and city or state park pools. It's the natural ones that are the most alluring."It just offers people the opportunity to go out and explore these places and make them your own," said Dave Hajdasz, webmaster for New England states for my blog, a website that maintains a state-by-state listing. "You can go to a swimming hole and often there's nobody there. Everybody has this fantasy of finding this bucolic place with a waterfall, so there's that kind of romanticism. There are no rules. There is no help. But people like that danger, they like that freedom. You just go to swim."

Among Vermont's most popular is Warren Falls, a spectacular gorge with waterfalls that cascade into pools for swimming and cliff jumping that's located on Green Mountain National Forest land, in Warren. It's easy to miss. It's on Route 100 south of the village of Warren, and is unmarked, with just a pull-off parking area and no signs to direct you. Once you've stepped onto the trail, a steep, winding tree root-embedded path leads to the main swimming area.

The Benefits of Wearing MBT Shoes

The Benefits of Wearing MBT Shoes

The MBT shoes act as a relief of muscular, joint problems and also back problems. This is because of their designed shape which helps in the reduction of these problems. On the other hand, the shoes also increase blood circulation which in turn encourages an upright posture with fully relaxed strides. Tyne Daly Teaches Sierra Boggess a 'Master Class'.Remember that a good posture increases metabolism and as such more calories are burned thereby helping youlose weight if need be. It is worth noting that MBT shoes are quite comfortable on the feet thereby providing you with the convenience that you need.

The MBT shoes reduce any pain that is experienced in the whole body. Every muscle ache or at times joint ache is reduced by these shoes by increasing strength, stability, posture and balance as well. The MBT shoes are cushioned on the ground which gives the wearer a sense of comfort while walking thus helping in the reduction of pain.  The health benefits that MBT shoes provide are to the diabetic patients who are given reduction of foot pressure leading to a normal distribution, plantar fasciitis patients, chronic back pain sufferers and osteoarthritis patients who are offered improved strength and balance.

Cholera Surges in Haiti's Central Plateau

Cholera Surges in Haiti's Central Plateau

An old man with sunken cheeks is so dehydrated he must be carried down the dirt lane to a clinic where the air is thick with the odor of bleach. Minutes later, a worried father enters, carrying a two-year-old girl in a frilly white dress, her eyes sunken and unfocused.Small steps see shoe sales soar.

Such scenes are once again common in Haiti where a deadly cholera epidemic that swept the country last fall has returned, fueled by weeks of heavy rains that have helped spread the waterborne bacteria that flourishes in the country's rivers and rice fields.

The treatment center in Mirebalais, a dusty crossroads town a one-hour drive north from the capital, Port-au-Prince, is again seeing dozens of new patients a day, many arriving at the edge of death from dehydration.

The center saw a fivefold jump from April to May and it hasn't let up since, said Louise Ivers, senior health and policy adviser to the U.S.-based Partners in Health, which runs the clinic in association with the Health Ministry."When people come here, they're in critical condition, ready to die," said Francole Adonis, who registers the new arrivals at the center. "They're collapsing in the yard. The situation is horrible."

The number of new cases each day spiked to 1,700 day in mid-June, three times as many as sought treatment in March, according to the Health Ministry. The daily average dropped back down to about 1,000 a day by the end of June but could surge again as the rainy season develops. The epidemic began in rural Haiti last fall, likely brought by U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal. It swept through the countryside of an impoverished nation already overwhelmed by a January 2010 earthquake that left hundreds of thousands homeless and by political instability following disputed elections.

Tyne Daly Teaches Sierra Boggess a 'Master Class'

In a Times Square hotel restaurant, Tyne Daly sees Sierra Boggess approaching and immediately looks down at the young woman's feet."Hi, honey. Let's see the kicks," she says. "Whaddaya got?"Boggess, who looks radiant in a spaghetti strap maxi dress, has her hair pulled back in a ponytail and a pair of strappy wedges with towering 4-inch heels.Pets Still Homeless After Joplin Tornado. She lifts the dress ever so slightly to reveal the goods.

Daly and Boggess may be playing a chilly teacher and her overawed student in a revival of Terrence McNally's Tony Award-winning "Master Class," but they have bonded like sisters over something quite pedestrian.Their love of footwear has evolved into a little bit of a friendly rivalry. The other day, Boggess says she showed up for an interview in a pair of black Christian Louboutin d'Orsay style pumps, which she'd bought in London to congratulate herself on landing "Love Never Dies" in the West End.

The 29-year-old actress, excited to show them off, waited for Daly to arrive and gush. When her co-star walked in, though, Boggess' face fell: Daly had upped the ante and had some of her most expensive shoes flown in from Los Angeles. She was wearing an impressive pair that had an ankle strap, sparkles and sunflowers. What made the moment even funnier was that both women hadn't brought out their big guns for a TV interview. "We were both doing radio, so nobody saw our shoes, but we had the best shoes on," Boggess says and cracks up.

Onstage, their easy rapport vanishes. Daly, 65, plays the imperious opera singer Maria Callas at the end of her career and Boggess plays Sharon, a gifted student enrolled in the diva's master class at the Juilliard School. Callas is withering in her sarcasm, criticizes the students' voices and appearance and brings Sharon to tears.Daly, the Emmy Award winner who played Mary Beth Lacey on the TV cop show "Cagney & Lacey" and later won a Tony for "Gypsy," was hesitant at first about playing the glamorous Callas, a role that originally earned Zoe Caldwell a Tony in 1996.

Small steps see shoe sales soar

Small steps see shoe sales soar

As retail bosses this week celebrate Birmingham's small shops, Consumer Editor EMMA McKINNEY disovers the city's top independent footwear firms taking big strides to success. WITH 814 independent shops to its name, Birmingham boasts the 13th highest rate of small retailers in the whole of the UK. Bosses at Retail Birmingham, aimed at promoting the city's stores, Pets Still Homeless After Joplin Tornado feel these one-off shops are so vital to attracting shoppers to Brum that this week it is holding a 'Celebration of Independents' to shout out about small shop success stories.

Among them are many burgeoning shoe retailers, which have been successfully navigating the economic storm, while other major high street chains have folded. Rachel Simpson set up her own business three years ago - arguably a brave move considering the recession. "Some people thought I was a little mad to be taking a big risk," says the 31-year-old, who lives in the Jewellery Quarter. "But I knew if I didn't bite the bullet I would never do it."

After graduating in footwear design in 2001, Rachel first worked for a small shoe firm before going on to create children's shoes for fashion giant Next. She then went freelance in 2005, with the view to set up her own firm. "I was so busy with freelance work I didn't have chance to do anything about my own business," she admits. "So I took a risk, dropped lots of clients and got on a plane to Milan to source factories."

After designing bespoke bridal shoes for close friends and family, Rachel realised there was a gap in the market for vintagestyle wedding shoes that did not break the bank. "Working for major fashion stores had left me sick of copying designs off the catwalk, turning them round as cheaply and quickly as possible to beat the competition. I wanted to make something timeless, something special." She launched Rachel Simpson Shoes at a wedding fair in 2008, and since then she hasn't looked back, moving the business from a studio in her back garden to a factory in Digbeth last year and now employs two staff.

Vince Bommarito fights off attackers who flee with briefcase and shoes

Vince Bommarito fights off attackers who flee with briefcase and shoes

Tony's boniface, Vince Bommarito, was attacked by two men outside of his house on Arundel Place about 10:30 p.m. on Monday night but after a brief scuffle the men ran off with his briefcase and a bag of shoes he had in his car."I'm scratched up a bit and have a few bruises but I've had bruises and scratches before," Bommarito said Thursday. "I've lived in that house for 47 years and I've never had anybody look at me crooked before."

Bommarito, who is nearly 80, said he was getting his belongings out of the back seat of his car when the men attacked him.MBT Shoes Clearance - The Anti-Shoe at Low cost Charges He said he managed to kick and squirm and then bite one of the attackers on the hand before they took his briefcase and the shoes and ran off.

A police report on the incident says Bommarito was hit in the face and knocked to the grass by the suspects who then left in a newer model, white full-size pickup truck they had parked nearby. The report added that Bommarito had a minor laceration above his lip but refused medical attention.

Bommarito said the men had bandanas over their faces and tore his pants while trying to get his wallet out of his back pocket -- only Bommarito didn't have a wallet in his back pocket. He said they tore his watch off his wrist but dropped it during the scuffle and that he found it later.

The most valuable thing he lost was his address book, which Bommarito said would be nearly impossible to duplicate. He lauded the police for finding it and calling him about 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning to report that they had recovered the book. He said the robbers also took a checkbook out of the briefcase and two of the three pairs of shoes that were in the bag."They left the Gucci's," Bommarito said. "I guess they didn't know what they had."Bommarito is a former St. Louis Police Board Commissioner who resigned last year after admitting he'd interceded on behalf of a nephew arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence at Mardi Gras. He had nothing but praise for the way the police handled his situation on Monday.
