Everywhere I look, communist North Korea is a world both foreign and familiar to my Korean-American eyes, a place where the men wear Mao suits and children tote Mickey Mouse backpacks, where they call one another "comrade" and love their spicy kimchi.
Since becoming the Seoul bureau chief for The Associated Press in 2008, I have made five eye-opening visits to North Korea. The number of new cases each day spiked to 1,700 day in mid-June, three times as many as sought treatment in March, according to the Health Ministry. The daily average dropped back down to about 1,000 a day by the end of June but could surge again as the rainy season develops.The epidemic began in rural Haiti last fall, likely brought by U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal. It swept through the countryside of an impoverished nation already overwhelmed by a January 2010 earthquake that left hundreds of thousands homeless and by political instability following disputed elections.

"We were both doing radio, so nobody saw our shoes, but we had the best shoes on," Boggess says and cracks up.

After graduating in footwear design in 2001, Rachel first worked for a small shoe firm before going on to create children's shoes for fashion giant Next. She then went freelance in 2005, with the view to set up her own firm. "I was so busy with freelance work I didn't have chance to do anything about my own business," she admits. "So I took a risk, dropped lots of clients and got on a plane to Milan to source factories."
After designing bespoke bridal shoes for close friends and family, Rachel realised there was a gap in the market for vintagestyle wedding shoes that did not break the bank. "Working for major fashion stores had left me sick of copying designs off the catwalk, turning them round as cheaply and quickly as possible to beat the competition. I wanted to make something timeless, something special." She launched Rachel Simpson Shoes at a wedding fair in 2008, and since then she hasn't looked back, moving the business from a studio in her back garden to a factory in Digbeth last year and now employs two staff.

"The reality is, a lot of these people aren't in a position to come get these animals," said Joplin native Tim Rickey, a field investigator for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "They've lost everything."
"We feel we've exhausted every avenue to get the word out," Aquino said. "We've placed 250 yard signs. We have posters at food and donation distribution points, public service announcements on radio and TV, ads in the newspaper — everything we could think of to let people know their pets might be here if they're missing."
To handle the additional cats and dogs, the organization fixed up two vacant warehouses next to the shelter into air-conditioned kennels. A gravel parking lot outside a former used appliance store has been converted into an owner's waiting room, with plastic chairs and Polaroid snapshots of unnamed animals stuffed into thick three-ring binders.
