With each installation having to be entirely solar powered, the
Desert Equinox festival is the first of its kind and has been years in
the making.The Curator of Desert Equinox, Allan Giddy, said the scale
and potential of the exhibition makes it very exciting."There are
between 19 and 21 installations around town so what we'll be doing is
giving people a map and they'll be encouraged to go out in the evenings
and have a look."He says the project has taken a lot of work and a
considerable amount of time to bring together.
"What we've been doing for the last four or five years is working out ways that we can bring art out of the white cube and into public spaces."I've been working with solar energy for about 15 years and I see the advantages in using that to bring these technical artworks out into public spaces."Using solar power to bring the works to life has two main advantages, according to Allan."One, the autonomy that solar gives us and secondly the fact that it's a technology that's relatively needed at the moment in the way that we're looking at the challenges of climate change, etcetera."
